What is Major Trauma?
Major Trauma describes a serious injury or combination of injuries that are life threatening, life altering and/or have the possibility to cause long-term disability.
The cause of Major Trauma is referred to as the Mechanism of Injury (MOI) Common mechanisms of injury include:
- Road Traffic Collisions & Incidents
- Falls from height
- Sporting injuries
- Acts of violence
However, the largest proportion of major trauma related injuries are now caused by falls of less than 2 meters, with the largest population affected being those aged 65 and over.
