ICU Steps is a national charity to support patients and relatives  during and after critical illness.

For patients and relatives, the experience of critical illness is a traumatic experience which people who have not experienced it cannot understand. Recovery doesn't end when we leave the ICU or even the hospital. It's only just beginning. To get back to a normal life we need support, rehabilitation and patience because it will take time, often a year or longer, to overcome the physical, emotional and cognitive consequences of critical illess. However, you're not alone ". (ICU Steps  downloaded January 2025)

Steps aims are to:

  • Support patients and relatives affected by critical illness. Promote recognition of the physical and psychological consequences of critical illness through education of the medical profession and the general public.
  • Encourage research into treatment and the prevention of these issues.

ICUsteps is a national support group for people who have been affected by critical illness and has helped many former patients, their relatives and medical staff from organisations around the world.
